A Quick Ruby Tuesday

Ruby entranced by spraying water

What could induce Ruby to get so near the dreaded swimming pool?

Gage spraying the water

Ahhhh.  Her boy playing with the hose.  End of the summer fun!

Ha! Our dog is the opposite. Hates the hose. She’s a German Shepard.

Laugh! Ruby hates the hose too — but she had to keep an eye on Gage. What if it attacked him? Plus, a squirrel might come flying out of the end and then what?

I am interested in which dogs like water, and which don’t. No predicting. Our current dog doesn’t–she just runs around the pool when people are swimming, barking crazily, as if to say–everybody out of the pool.

There is *some* predicting. Most retrievers and other sporting dogs loooooove the water but there is a window in their puppyhood where if they don’t get introduced to it, they are more likely to not like it. Many other breeds aren’t that crazy about it as adults but probably would feel differently if introduced as young, carefree puppies.

For us, Ruby didn’t seem interested but we knew that she’d be around the swimming pool a LOT. If she fell in, we might not hear the little splash she made. So, I put her in the water with no intention of having her try and like it. She didn’t like it and steers clear. When we introduced lab puppies to it, I made sure they knew where the steps wear so that when they fell in accidentally on purpose, they would know how to get out. Herding breeds and protection breeds are more likely to view the water as unsafe for their charges and try to get everyone out.

And, of course, individual dogs are going to sneer at these generalizations. So, if your dog is a Lab who doesn’t like the water . . .
