Sky Watch – Look Up!

7 May

Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) & ???

Even on gray days, looking up can fill your eyes with beauty!

I couldn’t get close enough to id the smaller bird but was impressed with it’s bravery.

The smaller bird is a scrub jay. I presume the larger is a red shoulder?

Yea, it probably is a scrub jay which would explain it’s audacity, for sure. The large one is a Red-Shouldered. They are such lovely hawks!

We should all spend more time looking up instead of plodding along watching our feet. I do love hawks on wires. The little one looks for all the world (or at least to me) like a Scrub Jay. But like you say, it is far.

I was thinking a jay, also, especially after embiggening the photo. I suspect he knows that the hawk can’t maneuver closely enough to turn him into an afternoon snack. At least in theory.
