San Diego — A Fun City!

4 Apr

The week before our trip was hellish. I had massive deadlines that were hampered by my own procrastination. Reports cards were given out Friday before we left school and that was a huge stressor. But, we survived. I finished packing us up on Friday night and was actually in bed well before mid-night — a first for me, I must say.

We were on the road by 9am. We drove over to Gilroy for our first stop. A friend was helping us out with recharging our air conditioning in the FMC. That all went well especially since he noticed that we had broken a fan belt and showed Greg how to fix them. That came in handy on the trip (insert ominous music here). While the boys tinkered, I went off and got all the groceries we needed for the trip — this was our first time towing my car behind the FMC — it worked GREAT!

FMC and Suzuki

We spent the first night in Simi Valley in front of Greg’s Uncle’s house.  Then we were off to San Diego.  It was Easter morning.  The kids were thrilled that the Easter Bunny visited us in our motorhome!  I wanted to have breakfast out somewhere so we were looking for a Denny’s — cheap, easy, likely to be good.  We found one in LA.  And, it was one of the highlights of the trip.  It was packed full — so much diversity.  We counted like 7 different ethnicities in there.  The owner came around and spoke to each table — you could tell the people he knew and yet, he made us feel so welcome.  The food was wonderful.  We left full and happy and feeling very good about the world.  Not a bad way to celebrate Easter.

After we left Denny’s we were on a hunt for an open store where we could get underwear (don’t ask!), a tool that Greg needed, and a couple of other necessities.  Oh, and coffee for me.  Denny’s does not cut it in the coffee department.  We found a Starbuck’s in short order.  We found countless Walmarts and Targets with cars pulling up and pulling away in disbelief.  Remember we’re driving around LA in a 29 foot motorhome towing another car behind it, so we aren’t up for a fruitless search.  Finally, we found an autoparts store open but had to give up on the rest.  Greg got the tool he needed for fan belt repair.  Yay!

An hour or so later, we were stuck on the side of the road, repairing another broken fan belt.

We arrived in San Diego in the late afternoon.  We explored the campground, had some ice cream, and headed out for dinner in Old Town.  It was wonderful — fantastic Mexican food.  After dinner, we explored Old Town a little bit, had more ice cream, and then went back to collapse in exhaustion!

Next stop?  Legoland!
